It is 2025 people.
In truth, the fashion industry is still one of the worst offenders and largest contributors to pollution and waste from water usage and carbon emmissions to textile waste in landfills. However the good news is, fast fashion has been increasingly losing its popularity and there has definitely been a shift towards sustainable and eco-friendly practices for both the consumers and the brands producing these garments.
People are realizing you don’t have to sacrifice style for sustainability and curating a sustainable wardrobe is not only better for the environment but sets you up to create a wardrobe you love and will wear for years.
1. Start with What You Already Own
I am a notorious horder and am not ashamed to say, I still wear things from elementary school within reason of course. But the point being, a lot of cycles circle back and if there are good quality pieces that fit, and that you love, consider holding on to them for when their moment in fashion circles back.
Before rushing out to buy new sustainable clothing or try to catch on to the latest trends, take a good look at your current wardrobe and see what works. You may be surprised by how many pieces you already own that can be worn, re-styled, or updated.
Of course, I am all for decluttering, especially for those who have less attachments than I do. However consider decluttering thoughtfully. Instead of simply throwing out items you no longer wear, try to donate, sell, or repurpose them. Items in good condition can find a second life with someone else, while worn-out clothes can be upcycled into something new.
Pictured above and below are examples how I have mixed and matched pieces in my wardrobe to achieve completely new looks. I also personally love investing in sets such as my wool two piece suit set below as I can use the pieces mix and match as well.
2. Invest in Timeless, Versatile Pieces
Shifting to a sustainable closet doesn’t mean you have to cease shopping. It is just more about investing in high-quality, long-lasting pieces that are versatile and timeless and that can be mixed and matched for different outfits.
Some Tips:
- Choose Neutral Colors: Neutral shades such as black, white, gray, beige, and navy are timeless and versatile. These colors are easy to pair with one another, meaning you can create numerous outfits from fewer pieces. Neutral tones also have a longer lifespan in terms of trends, so they won’t go out of style as quickly.
- Opt for Classic Styles: Choose pieces that never go out of fashion, such as a well-fitted blazer, tailored trousers, a simple white shirt, a cozy sweater, or a versatile dress. These wardrobe staples can be dressed up or down depending on the occasion.
- Prioritize Fit, Fabric & Durability: The fit of your clothing is just as important as the fabric it’s made from. Well-fitting garments tend to last longer and look better on you. Look for natural, durable fabrics like cotton, wool, linen, and hemp that can withstand repeated wear without losing their shape or appeal. By looking for clothing that is well-constructed, with strong stitching and high-quality materials. Items that are made to last will ultimately save you money, as you’ll need to replace them less often.
3. Shop Secondhand and Vintage
The secondhand and vintage markets are booming and the options, especially in the luxury sector are increasing. The word “vintage” is such a buzz word and almost seen as more exclusive. Second hand shopping can be a fun way to discover unique one-of – a- kind pieces. Aside from joining the “cool club”, by buying pre-loved clothing, you’re giving garments a second life and helping to reduce the demand for new clothing production.
From local thrift stores, consignment shops or online marketplaces like ThredUp, Poshmark or Depop which offer options at more affordable prices to the luxury end at chic NYC boutiques like What Goes Around Comes Around and Repurpose Style, to the Vestiare Collective to get that vintage fix, these items were made from past decades and stood the test of time.
4. Support Ethical and Sustainable Brands
Another tip for shoppers when buying new clothes, is to choose brands that prioritize sustainability and ethical practices. These brands are transparent about their supply chains, materials, and labor practices. Supporting these companies helps promote a more sustainable fashion industry. Consider looking for brands that use sustainable materials, practice fair traide and ethical labor practices, and minimize their waste and carbon footprint
One of my favorite sustainable luxury brands that you may see me sporting often is Stella McCartney. Stella McCartney is one of the pioneers in sustainable luxury fashion. Known for her commitment to cruelty-free clothing, McCartney’s brand exclusively uses plant-based materials and has been championing sustainable practices for years. The brand uses organic cotton, recycled fabrics, and alternatives to leather, such as mushroom leather. I have worn my beloved Falabella bag to death. It feels so luxe and stylish and adds a little edge to my looks with a still effortlessly classic feel.
Another sustainable brand you’ve seen around my gram is Sarah Flint. With over 10 pairs in my collection, the brand has lot’s of incredible styles with innovations for comfort and sustainability. Sarah Flint emphasizes using high-quality, responsibly sourced materials, including sustainable leather and eco-friendly packaging as well as transparency about manufacturing process ensuring fair labor practices.
5. Care for Your Clothes Properly
Proper care is essential to extending the lifespan of your clothes. One of the biggest tips I can offer as tedious as it may be is to READ THOSE CARE LABELS when they come on your garments. Resist the urge to think you know better as you’ve handled washing your clothes for years, as each garment is constructed differently and can have different needs. In general here are a few other tips:
- Wash Less Frequently: Washing clothes too often can wear them down quickly. Air them out between wears and spot clean when necessary.
- Use Cold Water and Gentle Detergents: When you do wash your clothes, opt for cold water and eco-friendly detergents to reduce environmental impact and keep your clothes looking new for longer.
- Air Dry: Air-drying your clothes rather than using a dryer is gentler on fabrics and helps them maintain their shape and quality over time.
- Repair Instead of Replace: If a button falls off or a seam rips, consider repairing the item rather than discarding it. Small repairs can keep your garments in use for years.
Conclusion
Crafting a sustainable closet is a journey that requires intention, care, and mindfulnes. Remember, the goal is not to completely overhaul your closet overnight but to make gradual, thoughtful changes that will lead to a more sustainable, stylish, and long-lasting wardrobe. With a little effort and planning, you can craft a sustainable closet that you’ll be proud of for years to come.
