While we are well into the holiday season, let’s consider the next few weeks double time when it comes to the parties. Each year brings fresh ideas and new trends in how we celebrate so I put in a little research to provide inspiration for exciting and emerging trends for your holiday parties this year. From party themes and unique decor to the latest food and drink trends.
1. Themed Cocktail Parties
- Trend: Holiday cocktail parties are evolving into themed events, offering fun and creativity that guests will appreciate.
- Ideas:
- Winter Wonderland & Apres: This was an especially big theme last year biut a snowy frosty white and blue color scheme definitely sets the tone for the season. Think snowflake decor, and frosty cocktails or warm ones like mulled wine or hot toddys. Bonus: You can apply the trending winter white looks as a suggested dress code.
- Ugly Sweater Party with a Twist: Invite guests to wear their most outrageous holiday sweaters, but with an upscale twist by creating a styling contest of who can manage to wear it best.
- Prohibition Era: Another popular theme throughout events I attended this year along with the rise of speakeasys throughout the year. Combine the trends and xhannel the Roaring ’20s with a jazz-infused speakeasy-themed party, where cocktails are served in vintage glasses and the dress code is flapper-chic. Maybe have a pass-code at the door.
2. Interactive Food Stations & DIY Elements
- Trend: Instead of a traditional sit-down dinner, many holiday parties now feature interactive food stations, where guests can engage in the preparation of their food. This is also great and takes out the fuss of preparing and having to serve all night. Plus there are tons of chic displays that have been stealing the show and all over Instagram.
- Ideas:
- DIY Hot Chocolate Bar: Let guests create their own hot chocolate with a variety of toppings like marshmallows, whipped cream, peppermint sticks, and flavored syrups. Consider getting cute mugs and letting guests take them home as a keep sake.
- Taco/Burger/Salad Bar: Set up a station with various fillings, toppings, and sauces where guests can customize. It’s a fun and festive idea that appeals to all ages.
- Build-Your-Own Cookie Station: Perfect for a holiday-themed dessert bar, where guests can decorate their own cookies or cupcakes with a variety of frostings, sprinkles, and edible decorations. For great recipes be sure to check out my recent post here.
- Holiday Crafts: Set up a station where guests can decorate their own ornaments to take home. Another would be a Holiday Potpourri Station with a mix of dried fruits, spices, and essential oils, or a DIY Flower Bouquet with seasonal options.
3. Think Cozy and Intimate Gatherings
- Trend: After all the larger-scale events with colleagues and clients, people are opting for more intimate, cozy gatherings with close family and friends.
- Ideas:
- Homey Decor & Comfy Dress Code: Think warm, rustic accents like plaid tablecloths, candles, soft lighting, and cozy blankets scattered around seating areas. Turn up the fireplace if you have one. Maybe you even want to break out your long johns and turn this into a cozy pajama party.
- Comfort Food: Serve familiar comfort foods that evoke warmth and nostalgia, such as mac and cheese, mashed potatoes, or hearty casseroles.
4. Personalized Experiences
- Trend: Guests love when a host goes the extra mile to make the party feel personal, especially in 2024, when everyone is craving connection and thoughtfulness.
- Ideas:
- Customized Favors: As mentioned in my recent gift guide for out of the box gifting ideas, it is the little details that mean the post. Provide personalized party favors like engraved ornaments, monogrammed mugs, or unique holiday cookies that guests can take home.
- Memory Lane: Create a memory wall where guests can post photos, notes, or mementos from previous holidays spent together, creating a nostalgic and sentimental atmosphere.
- DIY Holiday Cards: Have guests make their own holiday cards as part of the event, offering art supplies and setting up a little station where everyone can create a custom card for someone in the group or donate the cards to a local shelter or hospital to brighten the days of those in need.
5. Healthy & Sustainable Holiday Celebrations
- Trend: Many people are more conscious of their health during the holiday season, and they want to enjoy festive food and drinks without overindulging. Eco-consciousness is at an all-time high, and this year’s holiday parties reflect that. Readers will be excited to learn how to host an environmentally friendly gathering without sacrificing the festive vibe.
- Ideas:
- Healthier Options: Serve light, refreshing cocktails made with natural ingredients like fruit juices, herbs, and less sugar. For those who are starting their detox early, mocktails are also a great alternative. Keep the menu light and easy opting for healthier choices and small bites. Here are some recipes for small bites and easy apps.
- Eco-friendly decor: Use reusable decorations like cloth banners or natural elements (pinecones, berries, dried flowers) to create beautiful, low-impact decor.
- Sustainable tableware: Opt for bamboo or recyclable plates, cups, and cutlery. Consider compostable options, or go with washable items to minimize waste.
- Gift wrapping: Share alternatives to traditional gift wrap, such as using fabric, newspaper, or reusable shopping bags to wrap presents. You can also make a gift wrapping station for others to take advantage of.
When hosting a holiday party, there really is no wrong answer, as it is the good company that means the most. However I hope these ideas provide some inspiration to make your gatherings all the more trendy and creative.
