As someone who lives and thrives in the hustle of constantly seeking out the next best experience, this Thanksgiving I wanted to kind of hit the pause button and celebrate the true reason of why such a holiday exists.
Those who know me personally know that the last half of this year has been incredibly challenging. For reasons I may be open to sharing in the future, know that even in the midst of having your life upended still comes with blessings and lessons learned. While I encourage you to visit the post from earlier this summer on some more life lessons I have come to learn, today I would like to focus on one that is always readily available – that is the importance of honing into gratitude.
I am certainly not an anomaly. Whether due to the social or financial climate or trouble on the home front, or personal struggles you may be dealing with, life has a way of throwing challenges our way, and sometimes those challenges can feel overwhelming. Adversity is a constant factor that we will all face at some point in our lives, a season of winter sort of speak. During these times, it’s easy to feel consumed by negativity, frustration, or despair. However, gratitude is a tool always available to shift your perspective there is a powerful tool we can use to help shift our perspective—gratitude.
Practicing gratitude during adversity might seem counterintuitive. After all, how can we feel thankful when life feels unfair or difficult? But the truth is, cultivating gratitude in tough times is not about ignoring our pain or pretending everything is okay. It’s about choosing to focus on the things we can appreciate, even in the midst of hardship. By doing so, we can build resilience, maintain hope, and discover hidden blessings that help us move forward.
1. Gratitude Shifts Your Focus
When facing adversity, it’s natural to focus on what’s wrong—what we’ve lost, what we’re missing, or what we wish were different. The truth is that if you are constantly focusing and looking for reasons to be unhappy or actively looking for flaws, you will always find them. But the same practice can be applied to what’s right, what is going well, and the good that surrounds us. When we make a conscious effort to practice gratitude, we shift our focus from scarcity to abundance and from the negative to the positive. Gratitude helps us see what we still have, rather than what we’ve lost.
Even when everything is seemingly falling apart, there is always room to express gratitude for something – whether it’s the newfound skills you were forced to learn through being pushed out of your comfort zone or the support of loved ones around you, you are able to start focusing on the positive aspects of any situation.
2. Gratitude In Building Resilience
Gratitude helps build resilience by reminding us of our strengths and the resources available to us. When we’re in the midst of a struggle, it can be easy to feel helpless or defeated. But take a moment to reflect on past struggles and times when things seemed impossible. You made it through and have come out on the other side even stronger than before. Gratitude helps us see how far we’ve come, and in doing so, it builds the strength to keep going. The more we practice gratitude, the more we train ourselves to look for the good—even in tough situations.
3. Finding Lessons in Adversity
One of the most powerful aspects of gratitude in adversity is that it allows us to find lessons in our struggles. Every challenge we face, no matter how painful, carries a lesson that can help us grow and pushes us past boundaries we may have thought we had or put in place. Practicing gratitude helps us see these lessons and growing pains and embrace them as part of our journey.
For instance, if you’re going through a health scare, gratitude can help you appreciate the value of good health, and motivate you to take better care of yourself moving forward. Or, if you’re experiencing financial difficulties, gratitude can help you realize how important financial literacy is and inspire you to learn more about managing money for the future.
Rather than focusing on what we’ve lost, gratitude helps us see how these tough times can contribute to our personal growth.
4. Gratitude Strengthens Relationships
Adversity has a way of bringing people together. When we go through difficult times, the support of our loved ones becomes more meaningful. Gratitude enhances our relationships by encouraging us to appreciate the people around us, especially when they show up for us during tough times. Showing your appreciation for them also deepens your connection and strengthens your bond. There is also a profound sense of security in knowing that you are not alone.
5. Gratitude Brings a Sense of Control
When we’re going through tough times, it often feels like life is happening to us, and we have no control over the situation. Practicing gratitude allows us to take back some of that control. It’s a small but powerful act of agency that shifts the narrative from helplessness to empowerment.
Instead of focusing on the things that are out of your control, take a moment to focus on what you can control: your mindset, your actions, your attitude. Gratitude helps you reclaim that power, even in the face of hardship. It’s not about ignoring the difficult parts of life, but about recognizing the choices we have in how we respond to them.
6. Gratitude Helps Us Stay Grounded in the Present
In difficult times, it’s easy to get caught up in worry about the future or regret over the past. Practicing gratitude brings us back to the present moment, reminding us that there is always something to be thankful for right here, right now. The sunshine, the kind message from a friend, or the small victories of the day gratitude helps us stay grounded and focused on the here and now.
Taking time each day to acknowledge what you’re grateful for—no matter how small—helps you stay connected to the present moment. It’s a reminder that even in adversity, life is still happening around you, and there are blessings to be found in every moment.
7. Practical Ways to Practice Gratitude During Tough Times
If you are wondering how to put this all into practice, it really is as straightforward as it works. Gratitude journals hit the mainstream as having a huge impact on personal development and wellness. All it takes is noticing three things you are grateful for and writing them down either when you wake up to start the day or to help reflect on the day before bed. Sending a note to share your appreciation for loved ones is not only acknowledging a relationship you have to be grateful for but also a powerful ripple effect for the kindness you just shared back onto them. Meditating or taking a mindful pause to truly feel and appreciate the moment and things to be grateful for also go a long way.
Final Thoughts
Adversity is a natural part of life, but it doesn’t have to define us. By practicing gratitude, we can find strength in the face of hardship, build resilience for future struggles, and uncover and experience blessings even in the darkest of times. Gratitude doesn’t erase pain, but it shifts our perspective, helping us find meaning, growth, and connection. By focusing on what we are thankful for, despite our struggles, we can transform adversity into an opportunity for deeper understanding and personal growth.
No matter what challenges you may be facing, remember that gratitude is always available to you. The act of finding blessings in tough times is a reminder that we have the power to choose how we respond, and that even in our hardest moments, there is always something to be thankful for.
Happy Thanksgiving to you and all your loved ones.
