Hello, an impromptu Euro I had the privilege of exploring of the stunning region of Tuscany—and even though it was a quick in-and-out kind of visit, it was nothing short of magical. From charming small towns to breathtaking landscapes (and yes, a few style moments along the way), I can’t wait to share it all. Trust me, even the shortest stay in Tuscany is worth every second.
First up on the list is San Gimignano.
Let me start off by saying, it is such a must to just kind of walk around and get lost. It is a UNESCO World Heritage site preserving 14 of its towers throughout wars and catastrophes, as well as it’s medieval architecture. Often dubbed the “Medieval Manhattan” for its skyline of ancient towers, it is a breathtaking blend of history, charm, and unapologetic beauty.
The towers of San Gimignano is the cities most known attribute, however there are many gorgeous churches such as the Collegiata, various museums such as the Museum of Torture (displaying methods of medieval torture), as well as tons of beautiful art galleries, shops, and places to eat and drink. I didn’t get a chance this trip but I believe it is a must to climb the Torre Grossa and to visit the Rocca which has gorgeous views of the city and countryside.
Every piazza and side street gives you that authentic Italian feel. It is definitely a day well spent to just wander in and out of the streets and to see what you discover. It is the perfect destination to explore at your leisure without the pressures of a full itinerary of attractions.
- Torre Grossa: The tallest of the towers—and yes, you can climb it for panoramic views.
- Collegiata di Santa Maria Assunta is a seemingly modest Romanesque cathedral is with jaw dropping frescoes inside.
Some things to note about San Gimignano is that they are known for their Vernaccia, a white wine grape so famous it was mentioned in Dantes Inerfno, as well as saffron. I loved popping into this specialty foods store and picked up an awesome souvenir as well.
Style Tip
Plot twist, this was believe it or not a carry on only trip so I impressed even myself with how I packed. Name a more pinnacle and versatile summer outfit than a little white dress. I added a chunky blue statement necklace to add a pop of color and change it up. A necklace like that will do the trick to dress up almsot any outfit. These nude sandals also carried my way all throughout the trip. They just go with everything. If you are reading this in real time and are in the states, a look like this would also be a perfect festive look for July 4 weekend.
Notes For Next Time:
While I didn’t get to sit in San Gimignano for their take on the Tuscan culinary and wine experience, the region is synonymous with good food and even better wine and San Gimignano is no exception. The local white wine, Vernaccia di San Gimignano, has been loved since Dante’s time. Many nearby vineyards offer tastings and tours if you want to make a day of it. Pair it with truffle pasta or wild boar ragu for the full experience. I would also definitely want to try the world-famous Gelateria Dondoli—a multiple-time winner of the Gelato World Championship.
In a world constantly pushing us forward, San Gimignano reminds us of the beauty of standing still. San Gimignano may be small, but it leaves a big impression.
