Starigrad‑Paklenica: Where Mountains Meet the Adriatic

starigrad paklenica croatia travel

Nestled along the Adriatic coast in Zadar County, about 45 km northeast of Zadar, lies the peaceful town of Starigrad‑Paklenica. Set where the slopes of Velebit Mountain reach towards the sea, this traditional Dalmatian town is the ultimate base for adventure seekers and nature lovers alike. The tempo is slow and more of a local scene, but adventure seeking tourists tend to make their way here as Starigrad serves as a peaceful, scenic base with easy access to Paklenica National Park.

Founded atop the ancient Roman settlement Argyruntum which flouished in 1st and 2nd centuries AD, Starigrad today offers a laid‑back blend of pebble shoreline, rustic eateries, and accommodations ranging from camping and homey apartments to boutique hotels. You can visit remnants of Roman walls and structures along the beach promenade, a fascinating reminder of the town’s past life as a bustling maritime port.

The waterfront path, is lined with local cafés, small souvenir stands, and beach bars offering coffee, cocktails, and incredible sunset views. In the summer there are also local festivals, cultural performances, traditional music and food markets.

The beaches are pebble and rocky but the water is clear and refreshing. The minimal tourism also keeps the feeling very quiet and private.

You can get the true local experience by staying at one of the local Air B&Bs, shop in the simple grocery stores and bakeries and embrace a no fuss vacation lifestyle.

I stayed at this summer home rental minutes away from the beach. It was spacious, tranquil and the renters are so lovely to work with. The price is also very reasonable for the entire house also given the great central location.

Packlenica is also considered one of Europe’s premier climbing destinations with ~500 routes graded from 3 to 8b+—many accessible right at the canyon entrance, just meters from the coast.

Food Scene

Taverns like Konoba Marin, serve up some homemade traditional dishes, like fresh seafood, the famous squid ink risotto or peka (slow cooked meat or seafood under a bell). Expect hospitality as if you were visiting a friends home.

Starigrad is not flashy or overly touristic — instead, it offers authenticity, connection to nature, and a slower pace that many travelers crave. It is a worthy destination on your Croatian itinerary and when traveling along the Dalmatian Coast.
