As summer fades and autumn arrives with its beautiful burst of colour, there are few more gorgeous places to experience than Greece. You may decide to lie on a sandy beach, explore some ancient art galleries and architecture, or even spend time hiking the hilly landscapes. Here, we look at where to go in Greece this autumn and what you can expect from three fantastic locations.
1. Rhodes

If you aren’t quite ready to let go of the summer sunshine, then a beach getaway to Rhodes is the ideal autumn escape. The weather is milder than in the high season, but still warm enough to spend time on the world-renowned Anthony Quinn beach, where you can catch some sun and dive into the sea for a little snorkelling fun.
You will also be able to explore the mediaeval architecture of Rhodes, learn more about the town at one of its many museums, or visit Lindos Castle to soak up the atmosphere and history of this lovely location. This is a quieter choice than some of the other Greek islands, but there is still a lot to enjoy for a weekend or a whole week.
2. Thessaloniki

Not only is the city of Thessaloniki a popular filming location, where movies such as 2022’s “The Bricklayer” have been filmed, but it’s also known as Greece’s cultural capital. You can visit iconic sights like the White Tower and the Byzantine church of Agios Dimitrios, perfect for history lovers who want to discover crypts, castles and more.
You can easily make a day trip to Pella in Central Macedonia, or just enjoy spending time in the old port of Thessaloniki, sipping wine in one of the many tavernas or trying the locally brewed Greek coffee (think espresso but with a Greek twist). Pick up your souvenirs at the sprawling open-air markets and enjoy local delicacies in between discovering the ancient history and modern art galleries of this richly storied city.
3. Andros

Are you more interested in hitting the trails and exploring natural beauty than sunning yourself? Then the Cyclades island of Andros is a wonderful choice for an autumn break. The hot summer weather makes hiking around this beautiful island a little tricky, but with the cooler weather, you can make the most of the great outdoors and set out on some of the island’s many hiking trails, discovering the authentic villages that still dot the island.
Don’t miss out on the Tourlitis Lighthouse, which balances on a small rock in the ocean, and be sure to visit the Monastery of Panachrantos on one of your hikes too. With deep gorges of lush vegetation and rolling ocean views, this is an autumn getaway to remember.
While summer offers the warmest weather, autumnal Greece still has much to offer keen travellers. Whether you’re seeking a city break, a hiking holiday, or you want to enjoy some last-minute autumn sunshine before winter sets in, Greece is the perfect destination to explore during the autumn months.
