If you haven’t caught on to the theme of the month, the focus is definitely refreshing, restarting, and cleaning up mind and body. We’ve covered some clean beauty and skincare, sustainable fashion, and overall general tips for a clean slate, but mindset of course plays such an imperative roll in how these all factor in.
I think that one of the best ways to refreshing your outlook is by getting inspiration from others who already have already been through overcoming hurdles, set habits, reached their goals and learned to enjoy life. Whether through books, podcasts, or seminars, it is so important to feed your mind with inspiring and thought provoking ideas. I used to think the “self help” section was so cheesy but realized that there was a pattern with successful people and that they all learned and lived the teachings in these books. Here are a few that I love and highly recommend reading especially to kick of the new year.
Breaking The Habit Of Being Yourself
This read is a great starting point, because it is one of those books that forces you to go back before you go forward. Joe Dispenza takes you through a process of unlearning and becoming aware of the bad habits you want to get rid of even before approaching the idea of creating new habits and better patterns. Think of it as plucking the weeds before planting a new garden. He then provides meditations on getting still to visualize and attract that new life that you want.
The Seven Habits Of Highly Effective People
This book is a classic in the self development world and rightfully so. Even though written many decades ago, all of these principles can still be applied to our lives today. Some include how to prioritize your days and focus on the end result you want and the tasks that can get you there as well as focusing on what can be controlled vs living in reactive mode. The book is also filled with real and relatable examples.
The Power Of One More
One of the greatest lessons about building and maintaining habits is pushing yourself beyond your limits. Another big principle is about how the tiniest shifts accumulate and compound to a completely different destination. Whether it’s one more email or one more rep in the gym, or one more day that you don’t give up up yourself, that mindset can have profound impact on getting to where you want to go.I am a huge fan of the Ed Mylett podcast and definitely suggest it, especially when looking for inspiration to start the new year.
The Power Of Now
Another classic book in the self help realm, this one touches a little bit more on the spiritual way, but in a very practical aspect. In sum it is about staying in the present moment, not in the regret or longing of the past, or the worry or anticipating of the future but staying and enjoying the here and now, because essentially that is all we are guaranteed. It is about quieting the mind and mental chatter and ego and living fully in the present with a deeper sense of inner peace, joy, and connection.
Worthy
Jamie Kern Lima is a new face in the “self help” world with a beautiful and inspiring story about overcoming rejection and struggle to building a billion dollar business. Her book ties in many of the principles in other personal development books by showcasing how, if you don’t feel worthy, you won’t take action on building new habits or creating a new life for yourself. That we don’t rise to the level of our dreams but stay stuck at the level of our self worth. The book is written in a very approachable and digestible writing style that is filled with tips and inspiration
