Ikaria is an island in the Aegean strip that has become increasingly popular in recent years rising to fame as a blue zone (an area where people live significantly longer). While I will get into the unspoiled beauty of Ikaria in an upcoming post I wanted to focus this one particularly on nightlife, which is one of the most unique aspects of the island.
Unlike the bustling party scenes of other Greek islands, Ikaria’s nightlife reflects more of its laidback and authentic charm. Outings are more about enjoying good company, live music, and traditional Greek dances rather than bustling clubs and bars with all the bells and whistles. Local festivals, known as “panigiria,” where people gather to celebrate with food, wine, and dancing until dawn. Keep reading for more info.
Sunsets at Nas
Of course a good sunset has to be mentioned for an evening here. Nas is clearly the perfect setting to watch the sunset. There are also some cute tavernas and cafes on the water with this view. Nas is also it’s own beach to feel free to hike down for a swim.
Raxes
Raxes is probably the most “city-like” area of Ikaria and closest to what one would think of traditional nightlife. Here are the largest strips of “louder” bars with music and restaurants that stay open quite late. In my opinion, the type of vibe is definitely a little more rock, or hipster but it does vary from place to place and depend on the night.
Panigiria – Festivals
The main attraction of Ikaria. The island is known for their panigiria/ festivals. Different villages across the island take turns hosting. These start pretty early in the night and last WELL into the morning. The parties stay PACKED till 7am, 8am and even later into the morning and these take place most nights of the summer all throughout the island. Ikarians love their Ikariotiko dance, they will play it many many times over the course of the night so maybe learn it before going so you can really be part of the experience. Either way the dancing will continue all night long. The wine, admittedly is not the best, but the roasted goat sure is excellent. Attending a panigiri was amazing and one of the most authentic experiences that you will have not only in Ikaria, but in all of Greece.
I chose to lead with nightlife and panigiria because this particular time in August and around the Virgin Mary holiday are filled with festivals if you are planning to travel there this month or looking to plan a good time.
