A few years ago, before my first trip to Hvar, I definitely had my doubts. Usually I had the notion that an island, is an island, is an island – there are plenty of beautiful ones, and this one is probably gorgeous (no doubts on that) bu likely overrated and overpriced. WRONG WRONG WRONG. Hvar is 100000% worth the hype. On the pricier side yes, but worth every penny. Hvar has a little bit of everything: old town cobble stone streets, gorgeous views and a beautiful port area. There are also excursions such as the fort, monasteries, gorgeous beaches, and great day and nightlife as far as bars and clubs go. They are in my opinion some of the best in all of Croatia.
During my last two trips to Hvar, I came during Ultra Beach, part of the Ultra Music Festival and Yacht Week line up. If you ever get the chance to do the same, I highly recommend it as it is always a highlight of my summer.
On my second trip I also did take advantage of trying out some new experiences on the island. I climbed to the fortica, which honestly doesn’t take that long, and has some of the most spectacular views of the city. I wish I wasn’t so pressed for time, or I would have taken advantage to further explore it up there.
Hvar is definitely my happy place and I regret only visiting during day trips rather than an overnight stay or a weekend, but I am excited to be able to share this photo diary and mini guide on the island.
🏝️ Hvar Town: The Heartbeat of the Island
The main hub of the island, Hvar Town, is an intoxicating blend of history, luxury, and nightlife. Cobblestone alleys spill into lively piazzas, where cafes buzz and yachts bob just beyond. You can spend your days exploring local boutiques, sipping rosé at waterfront lounges, or hopping on a boat to nearby islands.
But the town itself holds treasures too — especially if you wander uphill…
🏰 Fortica Fortress: The View is Worth the Climb
One of the best ways to get your bearings in Hvar Town — quite literally — is from the Fortica Fortress. Perched high above the old town, this medieval stronghold dates back to the 16th century and offers a sweeping panoramic view of the terracotta rooftops, glistening Adriatic, and the Pakleni Islands just offshore. The climb isn’t too strenuous (wear comfy shoes and bring water if it’s hot), but I did it in all black and sandals and still managed. Once at the top, you’ll find ruins, canons, and photo ops galore. It’s definitely worth it
Hvar also has some of the most gorgeous and clear water that I have swam in. I am also obsessed with the uniqueness in the layout of the island.vThere are some sandy areas by hotels (Amfora is a big resort that I recommend), which may be the better bet if you are traveling with children. However, I much prefer the kind of seclusion and experience of getting a lounge chair or cabana in the middle of the rocks. Ok, it may be a little dangerous, but I love how private and just “cool” for lack of a better word it feels. Also when you do get into the water it feels like you have your own private beach.
🍹 Hula Hula Beach Bar: Sunset, Turned Up
Hula Hula Lounge is one of my FAVORITE beach bars ever. It usually has such a great vibe and you’ll most definitely find me there with a two liter cocktail any other given summer.
As one of the most known beach bars there, it’s an iconic part of the Hvar experience — a place where mojitos meet the music, and everyone’s dancing in a swimsuit by sunset. Located just a short seaside stroll from the town center, Hula Hula is known for its high-energy vibe, DJ sets, and unbeatable sunset views. Think Ibiza energy with Adriatic soul. Arrive around 5 PM, grab a front-row lounger or table, and watch the sky change while the beats kick in.
🌴 Calma Beach Bar: For Laid-Back Luxury
If Hula Hula is where the party starts, Calma Beach Bar is where you go to escape it. Nestled along the shore in a more tranquil cove, Calma delivers beach club style with peaceful energy. Think: plush sunbeds, sea-to-table bites, a chill house music soundtrack, and that salty breeze we all crave. Come early, stay late, and soak in the serenity.
🌊 Carpe Diem Beach: All-Day, All-Night Island Escape
Carpe Diem isn’t just a bar — it’s an institution. Located on Stipanska Island, just a quick water taxi ride from Hvar Town, Carpe Diem Beach transforms from chill daytime retreat to a world-renowned after-dark hotspot. During the day, expect luxe loungers, spa services, and stylish lunch options. By night? The place lights up with fire shows, live DJs, and dancing under the stars until sunrise.
Excursions and Palmizana
As I mentioned in my last post from Palmizana (see it here), which I also highly recommend you visit, one of the excursions I took to the island left from Bol and included two hours in Hvar and two hours in Palmizana, as well as lunch on the boat in between. This boat actually the only excursion to Hvar leaving from Bol (not Brac as a whole).
The other ferries, on the Jadrolinja ferry line, that go from Brac to Hvar leave from Supetar, or Sutivan on the other side of the island. These are great for when you plan on overnighting, or just want more control over how many hours you spend. Of course there are countless ferry routes to Hvar from Split and back leaving at all hours of the day.
