Vienna is home to some of the most iconic Christmas markets in Europe. Time and time again, ranking in the highest European Christmas markets, The Christkindlmarkt at Rathausplatz is the most famous, with its beautifully decorated stalls offering everything from handmade crafts to delicious Austrian treats like Sachertorte and Kipferl. The market is set against the stunning backdrop of the Rathaus (City Hall), creating a fairytale-like atmosphere.
Smaller, charming markets like those at Schönbrunn Palace and Belvedere Palace offer a more intimate experience, perfect for strolling, shopping, and enjoying the festive cheer.
No matter where you go, make sure to try the Gluhwein and Punsch, as well as some Liberkase, another Austrian dish which might literally be the most difficult thing to explain. You’ll just have to trust me and try it.

Schloss Schonbrunn is such a gorgeous excursion to take by day or night. Tours of the interior are also available, which I am sure is equally beautiful (saving it for next time).

Beyond the markets and concerts, Vienna transforms into a winter wonderland with its beautiful holiday lights and decorations. Ice skating at the Stadtpark rink or the City Hall Park adds to the winter magic, while horse-drawn carriage rides through the city center offer a nostalgic and romantic way to experience the charm of Vienna at Christmas.
A little rundown on some food and drink recommendations…
Phil Cafe is such a cute and cozy spot. Doubling as a book store it has that retro vibe going on. Pictured above were some awesome hot chocolates we ordered (white chocolate, dark chocolate, and matcha)
Johan Frank Bar also didn’t disappoint. A nice lounge with good cocktails.
Joma. Now this place leaves me speechless. Hands down the best meal I had in Vienna. No words will suffice the experience. Pictured are the wild goose tacos (seasonal) and the imported Rib Eye steak.
Heuriger Belihart is located in a small suburb outside of Vienna but was by far the most authentic experience. Such a humble spot with the sweetest staff members, everything served here is straight off the family farm and is definitely seen in the quality and freshness of the food.
Aida Bake Shop
I’m all about the authentic food experience and you’ll always find me having thorough conversations with waiters about what to order. Sachertorte (basically a glorified chocolate cake) is a Viennese specialty and to say that it’s delicious would be a major understatement. Also no complaints on the apple strudel which is another classic thing to order while in Austria. Where to get them? Well for the Sachetorte , the original spot would be at Hotel Sacher. But if you can’t make it there, Aida is one of the most popular coffee shops in Vienna and is now franchised all over the world! Cant make it to Aida? Try any one of the other countless coffee shops in Vienna. There are so many cute options, I wish I had time to try them all!
