If you haven’t ever been on social media, or missed my last post on immersive exhibits you have to check out in NYC right now, then you may not yet know about the incredible Museum Of Art And Technology known as Mercer Labs. This is by far one of the most incredible museums but overall experiences that I have checked out in quite a long time. So much so I thought it necessary to give it it’s own spotlight, especially with a special upcoming exhibit in the works.

First A little On Mercer Labs:

A Convergence of Art and Innovation

Mercer Labs is more than just a museum; it’s a dynamic hub where art and technology converge. The museum’s mission is to explore how technological advancements can enhance artistic expression and vice versa. This symbiotic relationship is evident in every corner of the museum, where cutting-edge technology meets creative artistry to produce stunning, thought-provoking exhibits.

Interactive Exhibits

The museum is comprised of fifteen distinct themes and rooms each offering its own experience especially through utilizing the senses of visual and sound. This is also a special museum in that there is really something for all ages. From the fascinating immersive visuals to the fun and playful ballpit or instagram worthy flower cave (although truth be told everything about this place is Instagram worthy), this experience holistically satisfies everyones needs and wishes. One of the standout features of Mercer Labs is its commitment to interactivity. Unlike traditional museums where visitors passively observe, Mercer Labs encourages active participation. Visitors can engage with exhibits through virtual reality (VR), augmented reality (AR), and mixed reality (MR) installations. These interactive experiences allow visitors to step into the artwork, becoming part of the narrative and exploring new dimensions of creativity.

Highlight: The Immersive Gallery

The Immersive Gallery is a highlight of Mercer Labs, showcasing rotating exhibits that utilize VR and AR to create fully immersive environments. These exhibits often blend elements of storytelling, gaming, and fine art, providing a multifaceted experience that challenges perceptions and stimulates the imagination. From exploring fantastical worlds to experiencing historical events firsthand, the Immersive Gallery offers a diverse array of experiences that leave a lasting impression.

Special Events and Exhibitions

Mercer Labs frequently hosts special events and exhibitions that draw visitors from around the world. These events often feature talks and panels with leading figures in the fields of art and technology, providing valuable insights into the latest trends and developments. Additionally, the museum collaborates with other cultural institutions and tech companies to bring groundbreaking projects and installations to New York City.

The Upcoming Tribeca Festival Immersive Exhibit

Mercer Labs is hosting the 2024 Tribeca Festival’s Immersive Program from June 6 to 17. This year’s lineup features eight exclusive large-scale immersive artworks from renowned digital artists, including Memo Akten, Wen-Yee Hsieh, ScanLAB Projects, Robertina Šebjanič, Liam Young, and Sutu. Each piece is meticulously curated to complement Mercer Labs’ unique architecture and state-of-the-art technology.

The immersive program is divided into three thematic presentations: Body In The WorldRedesigning Tomorrow, and Far From Nature. These exhibitions invite visitors to engage with art in new and profound ways, provoking reflection on our relationships with society, technology, and the natural world.

Highlights include Memo Akten’s “Embodied Simulation,” a multiscreen video and sound installation that combines artificial intelligence, dance, and neuroscience to extend viewers’ perceptions beyond their physical selves. Wen-Yee Hsieh’s “The Great Filter” and “Invisible Them” explore identity and the collective subconscious through digital graphics and interactive environments. ScanLAB Projects’ “FRAMERATE: Rhythms Around Us” uses LiDAR technology to capture the flux of life on Earth, creating a stunning visual and sonic experience.

As part of the Tribeca Festival’s commitment to fostering digital talent, the immersive program at Mercer Labs will also feature free artist talks and events at the Tribeca Festival hub at Spring Studios from June 6 to 8. Additionally, the festival will launch “The Circle,” an incubator program aimed at supporting emerging digital artists through collaborations with industry leaders such as Google, Meta, and MIT Open Documentary Lab.

Mercer Labs and the Tribeca Festival’s immersive collaboration not only showcase the forefront of digital art but also emphasize the importance of innovation, creativity, and technology in shaping the future of museum experiences. This partnership marks a significant milestone in both institutions’ histories, continuing their legacy of pushing the boundaries of artistic expression.
