Naturally the weather SUCKED the first day (and throughout the week), and looking cute becomes increasingly hard but you can’t rain on the NYFW parade. For me, day one started at Fashion Hong Kong, a showcase featuring three of their top designers. Right after I got to see the classic evening wear designer Tadashi Shoji. Both great shows, and a really great way to kick of fashion week.

Fashion Hong Kong
This year we saw collections from Heaven Please +, Sun = Sen, and Harrison Wong. Each of these brands was very unique and gave us a a fun show filled with lots of creative designs. Fashion Hong Kong also hosted a super fun after party at Mr. Purple later on that night.
Heaven Please +

Heaven Please + is a brand giving modernity and a spin to simple clothing. Inspired by the Princess
of Wales and traditional British royal costumes, this collection was their take on using elements of the past and adding print and playing with shape to give us something new and fresh. My favorite piece: definitely the white opening coat. I also love the addition of the red leather gloves – so pretty and in theme.
Sun = Sen

Sun=Sen brought the sun out to NYFW. Her goal is to spread optimism, self expression, and breaking social stereotypes. The show epitomized her relaxed viewpoints of having fun with fashion. Everything from the upbeat music, to her display of bright colors and mismatched patterns, fun hats, and youthful pigtails created a fun and interesting show.
Harrison Wong

Harrison Wong closed out the Fashion Hong Kong show. Of the three designers these are definitely the more simplistic and wearable for the every day. This collection was inspired by abstract graphic visual art and gave us interesting versions of classic workwear. His use of fabric textures, color blocking with neutrals and then bright pops of blue and green, patchwork, and deconstruction were some of the ways in which he accomplished giving us basics but with far more edge.

Tadashi Shoji

This was such an incredible show and I knew it from the minuet the soundtrack started and the smokey blue lights appeared. Tadashi Shoji brought us to the intersection of where East meets West, namely the Mongolian empire. He drew influence from Nomadic outerwear and the imagery of Mongolian art in their tents with colorful tapestries and rugs. From these ideas, he created richly decorated but still functional pieces, also playing with different shapes and silhouettes such as puffed sleeves and cinched waists. While the historical inspiration was evident, Tadashi modernized it for the glam woman of 2020. Each piece was a work of art and there were so many from the lineup which I consider showstoppers.
