As you may already know, summers in Greece are a must for me. Having been blessed exploring much of the country over a span of many summers I can safely say no matter where you visit in Greece, you will not be disappointed. Greece, a land steeped in mythology and natural beauty, offers a rich tapestry of experiences from its ancient cities to its stunning islands. Whether you are an adventure seeker, history buff, or beach lover, Greece has something for everyone.
For my intro post this summer I figured I would almost 360 view – the north the south, and some of the Ionian, Aegean, and Dodecanese islands.
1. The North: Thessaloniki and Mount Olympus
Thessaloniki: Greece’s cultural capital, Thessaloniki, is a vibrant city with a rich history and a lively atmosphere. Visit the White Tower, an iconic landmark, and explore the Rotunda and the Arch of Galerius. The Archaeological Museum of Thessaloniki and the Byzantine Museum offer fascinating insights into the region’s history. Stroll through the lively Ladadika district, known for its restaurants and nightlife, and enjoy the city’s diverse culinary scene, which blends Greek, Balkan, and Ottoman influences.
Mount Olympus: The highest mountain in Greece and the mythical home of the gods, Mount Olympus is a paradise for hikers and nature enthusiasts. Explore the rich biodiversity of the Olympus National Park, hike the challenging trails to reach the summit, or enjoy the stunning scenery from lower paths. The picturesque village of Litochoro, located at the foot of the mountain, serves as a perfect base for your adventures.
2. The Aegean Islands: Ikaria and Samos
Ikaria: Known for its serene landscapes and the longevity of its inhabitants, Ikaria is a hidden gem in the Aegean Sea. Relax on the secluded beaches of Seychelles and Nas, explore the thermal springs of Therma, and hike through the verdant landscapes of the island. Ikaria’s slow pace of life and unspoiled beauty make it a perfect destination for those looking to unwind and reconnect with nature.
Samos: A lush, green island with a rich history, Samos is famous for its vineyards and archaeological sites. Visit the ancient Heraion temple, the Pythagoreion archaeological site, and the Eupalinian aqueduct, an engineering marvel of ancient times. Enjoy the island’s beautiful beaches, such as Lemonakia and Tsamadou, and sample the local wines, particularly the sweet Muscat of Samos.
3. The Dodecanese Islands: Symi, Rhodes, and Kos
Symi: A small island known for its picturesque harbor and colorful neoclassical houses, Symi is a charming destination in the Dodecanese. The island’s capital, Gialos, is one of the most beautiful harbors in Greece, with its vibrant waterfront lined with shops, cafes, and restaurants. Visit the Monastery of the Archangel Michael Panormitis, a significant pilgrimage site, and explore the island’s many walking trails that offer stunning views of the Aegean Sea.
Rhodes: The largest of the Dodecanese islands, Rhodes is known for its rich history and medieval architecture. The island’s capital, Rhodes Town, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, with its well-preserved medieval city walls, the Palace of the Grand Master, and the Street of the Knights. Explore the ancient ruins of Kamiros and the Acropolis of Lindos, relax on the golden beaches, and enjoy the island’s vibrant nightlife. Rhodes is also famous for its delicious local cuisine and wines.
Kos: Known for its beautiful beaches, lush landscapes, and rich history, Kos is an island that offers a bit of everything. Visit the ancient ruins of Asklepion, the sanctuary dedicated to the god of healing, and explore the medieval Castle of the Knights. Kos Town, with its vibrant nightlife, charming streets, and excellent restaurants, is a great place to start your exploration. Don’t miss the Tree of Hippocrates, where the father of medicine is said to have taught his students.
4. The Ionian Islands: Lefkada and Zakynthos
Lefkada: Known for its stunning beaches and lush landscapes, Lefkada is a hidden gem in the Ionian Sea. The island is connected to the mainland by a floating bridge, making it easily accessible. Lefkada’s beaches, such as Porto Katsiki and Egremni, are considered some of the most beautiful in Greece, with their turquoise waters and dramatic cliffs. Explore the charming villages of Nidri and Vassiliki, which are popular for water sports, and visit the picturesque Lefkada Town with its Venetian architecture.
Zakynthos:Â Famous for its breathtaking beaches and vibrant nightlife, Zakynthos is a popular destination in the Ionian Islands. Visit the iconic Navagio Beach, also known as Shipwreck Beach, with its crystal-clear waters and dramatic cliffs. Explore the Blue Caves, relax on the sandy beaches of Laganas and Kalamaki, and enjoy the island’s lively bars and restaurants. Zakynthos is also home to the endangered loggerhead sea turtles, which nest on the island’s beaches.
5. The Peloponnese: History and Natural Beauty
The Peloponnese, a large peninsula in southern Greece, is a region rich in history, culture, and natural beauty.
Ancient Ruins: Visit the ancient city of Mycenae, home to the legendary King Agamemnon, and explore the ruins of this once-great civilization. The ancient theater of Epidaurus, renowned for its exceptional acoustics, still hosts performances today. Olympia, the birthplace of the Olympic Games, offers a fascinating glimpse into the history of this prestigious event.
Medieval Castles: Explore the medieval castle town of Monemvasia, built into the side of a rock and offering stunning sea views. The fortress of Mystras, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, was once the center of the Byzantine Empire in the Peloponnese and is now an evocative site with impressive ruins.
Natural Landscapes:Â The Peloponnese is also home to beautiful beaches, such as those in the Mani Peninsula, and lush forests, like those in the Menalon Trail, perfect for hiking and exploring.
Here are some posts from last year of my explorations of the Peloponnesse.
Final Thoughts
Greece is a country of timeless beauty, where ancient history and vibrant culture come together to create a unique travel experience.
